Boys set records in both relays; girls' team gets firsts from Davidson, Kayleigh Horecky
The Scappoose Indians didnt contest for either the boys or girls team titles, but they did make their presence felt at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove last Friday night.
The Indians and Lady Indians both had some standout performances at the meet. The boys set records in both relays.
The boys 4x400 relay team turned in their fastest time of the season, and the fastest time in the state, plus broke the school record. It was a virtual dead heat with Siuslaw in 3:24.79. The Indians are the defending long relay champs and their time Friday was nearly two seconds faster than their state championship time last season. The relay team includes Mychal Hortert, Nick Rust, Matt Shoun, and Justice Oman. Hortert, Shoun and Oman were on the team last season. Rust replaced the graduated Stephen Bowe. The relay composition has changed at times during the season, but appears basically set right now.
Cottage Grove was a lot of fun, coach David Harley said. (There was) really good competition which is the whole reason we went south. Hopefully we have a better idea of what we need to work on these last couple of weeks in preparation for district and state.
The 4x100 team also set a school record of 43.40, taking second behind North Valley. The team includes Jadyn Harris, Jarrett White, Oman, and Paul Revis. Last year, the short relay team had one of the fastest teams in state, but DQd in the finals. Their time at the meet would have been second at state last year. The record was set by the championship team of 2011.
Oman would take second in the 400 meters at Cottage Grove with a 50.87, sixth best in the state. Also making a mark for the boys was Revis with a second in the 100, and an overall fourth in the long jump. His 100 time wasnt his fastest of the season. Revis and four others are all within two one-hundredths of each other on the 4A performance list. His 22-feet, 1-inch in the long jump is also second best. Friday, he went just 20-5 for fourth.
One other high finish for the Tribe came from Jadyn Harris in the 300 hurdles. He took second overall with a 41.36. His best (41.35) rates him sixth in the state.
Not to be outdone, Charlie Davidson and Kayleigh Horecky both had first place finishes. The versatile Davidson ran in the 800 in the meet and also on the fifth-place 4x400 team. Her 800 time (2:16.14) was her best of the season and third best in the state. That time was nearly two seconds better than the one that got her third last year at state, and better than the winning time. She was second in the 1,500 last season and is also rated second there again. She won the 1,500 as a freshman.
Horecky came up with her best long jump, 16-0, good enough for first at the meet. It is the ninth-best in state this year.
Also with a good effort at the meet was Eleanor Jones, taking third in both hurdle events, plus anchoring the 4x400 team. Her short hurdle time (16.54) was her best of the season and moved the freshman up to eighth overall in the state.
The Indians were trying to qualify as many athletes as possible for the state meet at district Thursday and Friday in Seaside.
