Softball players tapped all-state

Mariah Mulcahy, Sue Sass, Ashley Giesbers receive all-state honors

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Mariah Mulcahy, Sue Sass, and Ashley Giesbers were named to the 5A all-state team this past week. Mulcahy and Sass made the second team, while Giesbers received honorable mention. As the saying goes, “to the victor belongs the spoils” and that certainly was the case in the 5A all-state balloting.

State champions Sandy reaped much of the all-state honors, but St. Helens did get some notice with three players receiving recognition.

Northwest Oregon Conference Pitcher of the Year Mariah Mulcahy was named second team all-state, and graduated senior Sue Sass was also second team all-state in the infield (shortstop).

Honorable mention notice went to freshman outfielder Ashley Giesbers.

Sandy’s Sammie Byron was named Pitcher of the Year, while they also had Co-Players of the Year in seniors Chelsea Spanier and Meghan Leubbert. Coach Kellie Wilkerson was named Coach of the Year.

In all, Sandy had five players named to the all-state first team and one to the third team.
