S.W.A.T. softball team finishes third in state


Team wins first three games, all by shut-out

Not pictured: Dessa Cooper, Coach Kyle Cooper.The St. Helens S.W.A.T. Team finished third out of 17 teams at the ASA “C” State Championships in Albany last weekend.

The finish capped a successful season for the squad. The finished no worse than third in six tournaments.

In Albany, the team won their first three games, then lost two fairly close games to take third overall. Brea Paulson pitched all five games for St. Helens.

Paulson struck out eight on 73 pitches in a four inning, no-hitter, and walked just five in a 12-0 shut-out win over the Warriors to open the tournament. S.W.AT. would also shut out the Lady Rangers (4-0) and the Cherry City Crush (5-0) in their next two games. Paulson pitched five innings (105 pitches) struck out 14, walked just four, and gave up just one hit. She would strike out 13 on 71 pitches against Cherry City, and walk just three in a three-hitter.

The team would fall to the Rainbows in their fourth game, 6-2. Paulson struck out 11, but gave up eight walks, and six runs in four innings. Karlee Webster relieved and threw 16 pitches in two-thirds of an innings. She walked one and gave up two hits.

Paulson was back on the rubber for the final game. She threw 112 pitches, struck out seven, walked seven and gave up seven hits in a 7-5 loss.

Offensively, the team hit well during the tournament. Paulson had three singles and a double, scored three times and had two RBIs in the first game. Jasmyne Pense had two singles and four RBIs. Savannah Moore had a single and two RBIs.

Moore had a single, a walk, and RBI and a run in the second game. Pense had a single and two RBIs. Dessa Cooper had a single and a run. Paulson had two singles.

In the third game, Cooper had a single, walk, RBI and scored twice. Moore had two singles and two RBIs. Paulson had a single and a double and scored once.

Ellie Austin had two singles and an RBI in the fourth game, while Moore had a single and an RBI.

In the last game, Moore had two singles, Portia White had two singles and a run, Pense had two singles and a run, Austin had a single, a run and an RBI, and Maria Reardon had a single, walk, and scored.
