Tribe tops taller La Salle; falls to North Marion

Indians can't catch Huskies, but prevail over much bigger La Salle team
by: John Brewington TO THE HOOP—Scappoose’s Zach Smith goes up for two of his 19 points during last Friday’s game with La Salle.

The Scappoose Indians fell behind at North Marion on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and never quite got back into the contest in a 78-69 loss.

They would make up for that with an impressive win over ninth-ranked La Salle at home Friday, Jan. 6.

La Salle came into the game with a 9-2 record, having only lost to Central in the pre-season. They had players on their roster listed at 6-foot, 10 inches, 6-6, and 6-5. The Indians were seriously at a height disadvantage.

It was a rough and tumble first half with both giving as good as they got. The Indians used their quickness and La Salle used their tallness. After one period the Indians had an 11-10 advantage, and when the dust settled at halftime, the Indians were ahead 27-25.

The Tribe took control of the game in the third, outscoring the Falcons 11-5. La Salle lopped a point off that margin in the fourth, but couldn't close in.

The Tribe's Zach Smith led all scorers with 19 points, while Joe Nelson and Blake Updike were also in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively. The Falcon's Jacob McGraw led his team with 17 points, 12 of those coming in the final period. He was six for six at the free throw line.

The Huskies took an 11-point, 24-13 lead by the end of the first period, and the Tribe would be behind by 10-11 points for the next three quarters.

North Marion had two players with 21 points apiece, Sawyer Dady and Nathan Summers.

However, Scappoose had the game's leading scorer. Blake Updike would sink 27 points. That included 13 of 17 from the free throw line, four twos, and two threes. Eric Raya also had one of his best games with 15 points, but hit just five of 11 from the free throw line. Zach Smith got all 10 of his points in the fourth period.

The loss left Scappoose at 7-4 on the season, but boosted North Marion to 5-5. Scappoose moved to 8-4 on Friday with the win over La Salle.

Scappoose hosted Estacada on Tuesday night, and travels to Central on Jan. 13. They open league play at Yamhill-Carlton on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
