Indians win just two of three matches, but gain experience against some of the best teams
by: John Brewington UNDEFEATED—Scappoose wrestler Chris Wagner (one top) hasn’t lost a match this year and has his sights set on another state title.

The Scappoose Indians had a pretty good three days on the mat during their trip to Redmond for the Oregon Wrestling Classic.

The Indians wrestled some of the best teams in the state, going 2-3 in dual matches at the tournament.

'We wrestled pretty well,' Scappoose coach Jim Jones said. 'Some of the top 16 teams in the state, including the top four 4A teams were there.'

Scappoose had a close match with Ontario, losing 36-29, but handled North Marion 54-21. They lost to a very good Cascade team, 48-28, but beat Phoenix 54-21. Crook County is considered the top 4A team and the Tribe didn't fare as well, losing 59-12.

Jones said Chris Wagner is probably leading the team, performing at a very high level right now. He has yet to lose on the season. He has beaten several highly touted wrestlers, including a 6A champion. Wagner downed Johnny Vara of North Marion, and McKennan Buckner of Crook County among others in the Oregon Classic.

'He's come up against some quality opponents,' Jones noted, 'and he's wrestled some really smart matches.'

Wagner was a Montana State wrestling champion, and took third in his class at the Oregon state tournament last year. He should be the number one seed going into the tournament.

Jones said Cody Jackson and Taylor Walden have been doing a good job on the mat, and Isaiah Goodrich and Luke Mills have also been a having good season. He added that Ryan Bond and Hunter Hoyt have put up some good efforts against really quality opponents.

All in all, Jones thought the team was improving in performance with just a few weeks until the district, regional, and state tournaments.
