Lady Lions pick up first NWOC win

St. Helens tops Sandy 32-25 for first league win in three years
by: Kris Anderson TEAM LEADER—St. Helens’ Jillian Ross led the Lady Lions to their first NWOC win in three years

The St. Helens Lady Lions won their first Northwest Oregon Conference basketball game this season at Sandy on Friday and it was just their second NWOC win ever.

The squad got good guard play and most of their scoring from Jillian Ross, Michelle Sass, Nicole Harcourt, and Haley Twilleager in the contest. That accounted for most of their scoring (25 points) in the 32-25 win.

'Jillian was phenomenal, it was really a step up to leadership,' coach Billy McKinney said afterwards. 'She put the game on her shoulder and took over down the stretch.'

McKinney said the Lady Lions went to a conservative ball control game in the last period and their wasn't a lot of scoring. St. Helens would have just three points in the final period, but held Sandy scoreless.

'It was nice to get a league win,' he added. 'It's been a long time.'

St. and #8200;Helens has only one other league win in the NWOC since joining the conference.

McKinney felt the team should have beaten Rex Putnam earlier in the week, but was very tired after having played Sherwood the night before in a make-up game.

St. Helens would end up losing to Putnam 66-50, but not before making their presence known.

Freshman Michelle Sass had a career night against Rex Putnam, scoring 25 points and hitting four threes. She was 11 of 13 at the free throw line.

Emily Lauder led Putnam in scoring with 18, all on six threes.

Some Putnam comments made after the game have given St. Helens a goal to pull out a victory the second time around.

St. Helens fell behind Putnam in the first half, but played them dead even in the second half.

The Lady Lions are still in the hunt for a play-in round game, but will probably need at least three wins in the second half of play to earn a post-season berth.
