Lady Indians win Cowapa League swim crown

Tribe girls win eight events; boys finish second behind Seaside

SYNCHRONIZED RACING—Scappoose’s Erin Heath (bottom) and Sadie Krahn owned the 200 individual medley at Friday’s Cowapa League championships at the Eisenschmidt pool in St.Helens. Heath led most of the race, but Krahn caught her in the last 25 yards.

The Scappoose Lady Indians brought the Eisenschmidt Pool to a roiling boil on Friday with an impressive victory in the Cowapa League championships.

The title was the third consecutive win for the Scappoose girls.

'It was an excellent meet top to bottom,' Scappoose coach David Richmond said. 'Everyone swam well and it shows in the results.'

Scappoose won all three relays in the meet, capping it with a win by 22 seconds in the final 400 free relay. The girls got double firsts from Anna Ford in the 200 and 100 free and Cami Miltich in the 50 free and 100 fly. Sadie Krahn nipped Erin Heath in the 200 individual medley. Heath also had a third in the 100 back. Lacey Maloney added a second in the 500 free.

Ford, Heath, Miltich, Krahn, and Adrianna Martinez each swam on two of the relay teams.

'Sadie Krahn swam one of our most impressive races. She came back in the last 25 (yards) to beat Erin (Heath). Cami Miltich swam a 26.6 in the 50 free and a 1:04 in the 100 fly, just a second off Anna Heller's record,' Richmond noted.

Scappoose's boys took second place in the meet for the first time. They couldn't overtake a deep Seaside team, but did very well with the numbers they had.

Ryan Rafferty led the Scappoose effort with firsts in the 200 free and 100 breast. Todd Graham had a second in the 100 free and a third in the 200 IM. Jeremy Powell finished second to Rafferty in the 100 breast. Kody Backus had a third in the 100 fly. All three of them and Keegan Carey were on the winning 200 medley relay team as well. The 200 free relay team of Rafferty, Powell, Backus, and Todd Graham was second overall.

'Our goal for Ryan was to swim under a minute (in the 200 free) and he swam a 1:59, so that was super,' Richmond said.

With the league championships behind them, the Indians now concentrate on district this weekend in Astoria and qualifying for state.

The coach feels that if they can swim as well this weekend in the 200 free relay the girls have a good chance of sending all three of their relay teams to state.

Overall, he thinks the girls can win district. They beat Astoria by 102 points in the league meet, and should be able to win their second straight district title.

Individually, he thinks they should also be able to qualify some girls for state.

He's hoping the boys can qualify their 200 medley relay team, and feels Ryan Rafferty has the best shot at individually qualifying.
