Scappoose girls still in the hunt

Lady Indians lose overtime game at Seaside, but still have 'play-in' shot
by: John Brewington REBOUNDING—Scappoose’s Brittany Catlow pulls down a rebound with a defender on her back during last Friday’s game.

The Scappoose Lady Indians lost an overtime game at Seaside on Tuesday Jan. 31, but put themselves back in the Cowapa League race with a convincing win over Yamhill-Carlton on Friday night.

Scappoose led the Seaside contest in the second quarter, but let the Lady Gulls come back in the third frame. The two teams were tied at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. Seaside held a one-bucket margin for the win.

Scappoose started off slow against visiting YC on Friday, and committed several early turnovers. They were ahead just 7-5 after one. Then in the second quarter, it all started to click for the Tribe. They outscored YC 13-6 and held a 20-11 halftime lead.

Alix Raya and Kendall Kierleber did almost all of the damage for the Tribe in the second. Kierleber connected on the first and last buckets of the period, while Raya added three straight deuces midway. Two free throws by Lacey Updike completed the scoring.

Shay McGuire hit a three to start the third quarter, Brittany Catlow followed with a basket, and Raya hit two more for a 27-11 lead. Baskets by Zoey Hendryx, McGuire, and a three from Updike lifted Scappoose to a 34-15 lead going into the fourth.quarter.

The game was sweet redemption for the Tribe. They had trailed YC 28-9 at halftime in the league opener earlier, and lost 38-27. This was a complete turnaround.

With four games remaining in league play, Scappoose needs to win two of them to have a shot at a top four finish and earn a play-in game. There are a number of scenarios, including ties, but the Lady Indians will need at least two more wins to have a postseason shot.

Scappoose was at Astoria on Tuesday and travels to Tillamook this Friday. They finish league this next week with home games against Banks (Tuesday) and Seaside Friday.
