Lady Lions fall to Wilsonville, Milwaukie

Team loses by 20 in two outings; still could have play-in

The St. Helens Lady Lions dropped two games last week to the top two teams in the Northwest Oregon Conference, Milwaukie and Wilsonville.

The losses, both by 20 points, left St. Helens thinking they still may have a shot at postseason play, if they can win the majority of the four games left in the last two weeks of the regular season.

The squad was at Parkrose on Tuesday, at Liberty on Friday, host Sherwood this coming Tuesday, travel to Rex Putnam on Thursday Feb. 16, Sherwood on Friday, travel to Rex Putnam this coming Tuesday, and finish at home with Sandy on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

'We still have a shot,' St. Helens coach Billy McKinney said. 'We've been having good practices. They've improved a lot this season.'

The teams they face, with the exception of Liberty, are all languishing from the middle down in the conference. Some have had some injury problems. The thinking is that if the Lady Lions can three or four games they can move out of the cellar and maybe up into a 'play-in' berth in post season. Only two schools from the PIL, NWOC, and the Columbia River Conference are eliminated from the play-in round. If St. Helens can win some games they can move up in the standings and into the playoffs. St. Helens is currently just 33rd in the standings, but three PIL teams are below them.

St. Helens didn't play that poorly against Wilsonville or Milwaukie. Turnovers proved to be deadly in the Wilsonville game, and late turnovers helped Milwaukie put away their game.
