Scappoose girls dominate district swim competition

Tribe scores over 300 points and has eight district champions going to state
by: Kevin Alvrarez MEDLEY RELAY CHAMPS—Scappoose’s Adiranna Martinez, Erin Heath, Anna Ford and Cami Miltich qualifed for the 4A state meet in the 200 Medley Relay Saturday.

The Scappoose High girls swim team was the team to beat at the Special District 1 swim meet this past weekend in Astoria-and they were unbeatable.

The girls won all three relays, plus took individual firsts in five other events to dominate the event by over 100 points more than their nearest competitor.

'It was an emotional roller coaster ride this past weekend,' Scappoose coach David Richmond said. 'The major high point was the girls repeating as District 1 Champions. We also scored over 300 points and simply dominated.  We had eight District champions and 12 top three finishes.'

Richmond said the team knew from day one of practice this year what their goals were this season.

'This was a major goal for us, not only to win, but win convincingly. We're very proud of our girls team,' he said.

The girls qualified all their relay teams. They won the 200 medley by over seven seconds, won the 200 free by two seconds, and blistered the field with a win by just under 20 seconds in the 400 free.

First place in each event and some others qualify by time for the state meet this Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College.

Individual winners for the girls included Anna Ford in the 100 and 200 free, Cami Miltich in the 50 free and 100 fly, Erin Heath in the 100 back and by time in the 200 individual medley.

Richmond noted that this is the third year they've been in the hunt for a district title and the second year in a row they've won it. 'We qualified all three relays to state.  All of our district champions will be in the state meet.  Erin Heath also qualified in the 200 IM as well, which gives us a total of nine entries going to Mt. Hood Community College this weekend.'

The disappointing side of the meet came for the boys in the 200 medley relay with a DQ. They'd hoped to win the event and finish in the top six at state.

'Obviously, this hurt us in the overall team standings and took us from third to fifth,' Richmond lamented 'It was very disappointing to see the quartet not be able to compete at state, but it does not diminish what they did accomplish this year not only in the relay but as a team. From beating Astoria in a dual meet for the first time, to placing fourth at the Hood River Invitiational, to being in the top three in three major invitationals to open the year and placing second at league, we are very pleased with this year's boy's team. The effort and the focus this year was commendable. To meet so many goals this year says a lot about the hard work and character of our team.'

On a brighter note for the boys, Ryan Rafferty did qualify by time in the 200 individual medley and he won the 100 breast to also qualify in that event.

Gates open for the state meet at 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Scappoose is ranked in the top six in a number of events. Anna Ford is ranked third in the 100 free and sixth in the 200 free. Cami Miltich is ranked fifth in the 100 fly, and fourth in the 50 free. The medley relay team is fifth, the 200 free relay team is ranked 11th, and the 400 free relay team is ranked fourth.
