Championship on line in Fridays Seaside game

Win could determine title or set up playoff
by: Self-portrait Sports Editor John Brewington

This Friday's game with Seaside will be one of the biggest basketball games either Seaside or Scappoose has played for awhile.

The Cowapa League championship is at stake and the game figures to be just as close as their last meeting.

The 21-1 Gulls won that game, but just by a point, 51-50. The game came right down to the final buzzer, and Scappoose had led inside a minute. Seaside is undefeated in league play, but even that game wasn't the closest they've had. Just the game before, and #8200;Tillamook had taken them into overtime. Earlier Seaside had eked out a one-point win over a very good Roosevelt team. The Roughriders are ranked third in some 4A polls. Seaside is ranked second by some and fourth in the Oregon School Activities Association rankings.

The Gulls were scheduled to play Tillamook again on Tuesday in Seaside. If Tillamook pulls off a win, Friday's game would be for the title outright.

Scappoose, of course, had to win their game against Banks on and #8200;Tuesday. It shouldn't be a problem since the game is in and #8200;Scappoose, and Banks has yet to win a league game. They are 3-18 on the season.

Scappoose is 7-1 in league and 16-6 overall. The Indians have improved as the season has progressed and are a fun team to watch. By the records alone, Seaside should have an edge, but remember their last meeting was in Seaside. Officiating tends to be a little skewed on the coast. That doesn't mean it will be better in Scappoose, there is just a good chance it will be better.

All of Scappoose's losses have come against top 10 opponents, and only one was by more than single digits.

Friday's match-up sets a good stage for the upcoming playoffs. It will be Seaside with a size advantage, and Scappoose with a quickness advantage. The closeness of the last meeting says the two teams present each other with problems. If the Indians can catch fire from three-point range and get some transition buckets they have a good chance to win it.

Tribe coach Rahim Tufts expects nothing short of a game similar to their last meeting.

What if is always the question. If Seaside beats Tillamook, and Scappoose beats Banks and Seaside, then there will be a playoff game. The site hasn't been picked, but it will likely be neutral. and #8200;Last year when there was a tie, the two clubs play in Clatskanie. If the game happens, it will be on and #8200;Tuesday. and #8200;Cowapa League Athletic Directors were meeting on and #8200;Wednesday to go over some post season scenarios.

Whatever happens this week, Friday's game will be a fun one to watch.
