Tribe boys' soccer draws with Tillamook

Scappoose scores three unanswered goals to take a lead, but Tillamook pulls one back for the draw.

by: JOHN WILLIAM HOWARD - Junior midfielder Trevor Smith takes a shot on goal in the 53rd minute. Smith scored the go-ahead goal against Tillamook on Tuesday afternoon, but the Cheesemakers responded and the game finished in a 3-3 draw.At the end of the first half on Tuesday afternoon, the Scappoose boys' soccer team wasn't in the best position. They'd given up two first-half goals to Tillamook (4-3-1, 3-1-1 Cowapa), and hadn't taken advantage of any opportunities they'd seen in the first half.

The second period couldn't have been more different. The Indians (2-5-1, 2-1-2 Cowapa) came out aggressive in the first several minutes of the second half, knocking in three goals in a matter of minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Tillamook, howver, scored another goal to tie the game late and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

Trevor Smith opened the scoring for the Tribe in the 47th minute when a cross barely missed the outstretched boot of junior Asa Flanagan and fell to Smith in space, who knocked the ball up and over the Cheesemaker keeper. 47 seconds later, Flanagan broke through the Tillamook back line, froze the goalie, and sent the equalizer into the back of the net.

The Indians weren't quite finished. In the 53rd minute, Flanagan spotted Smith from around midfield, and threaded a pass through to the foot of the forward. Smith took a step and sent a rocket toward the frame, giving Scappoose the lead.

Tillamook scored 13 minutes later, and neither squad could break the stalemate.

“It is frustrating,” said Tribe Head Coach Scott Stanton, who was happy to see his player battle back, but thought they got comfortable once the Indians found a lead.

Stanton said the biggest positive was the poise Scappoose showed when handling the ball. Instead of playing 'hot potato' like in the game with Astoria, the Indians were able to win and hold possession.

Up next, Scappoose will take on Banks on Oct. 15 on the road.
