Regional wrestling tournament not a good day for Indians

Indians advance seven wrestlers to state tournament
by: Goodrich RUNNER-UP—Scappoose’s Isaiah Goodrich (160 pounds) took second place finishes at the regional tournament last Saturday at North Marion.

It just wasn't the kind of day, Scappoose wrestling coach Jim Jones neither expected nor liked to see.

There was just a little too much drama for everyone in the regional tournament at North Marion. Saddest part of the day was the loss of Chris Wagner. The 120-pounder was unbeaten on the season and would have been seeded first in the state tournament. He fell while warming up and dislocated his shoulder.

'It was a dramatic day,' Jones said. 'I've never quite seen anything like it. It was a crazy weekend and not in a good way.'

From the loss of Wagner to issues with referees, parents and coaches there was drama on and off the mat.

Bottom line was that Scappoose finished the day without a regional champ and didn't quite get the numbers they wanted to send to state.

'I thought we could have gotten a few more kids (to state),' Jones said. 'We were inconsistent in our matches. We've got to get strong and improve.'

Jones has a fairly young team.

The Indians did come away with some kids moving on to state. Cody Jackson (106), Isaiah Goodrich (160), and Branden Bailey (285) all made it to the finals and finished in second place.

Also moving on to state this Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland will be: Taylor Walden, fourth at 113; Luke Mills, third at 170; Jabin Pedro, third at 220; and Devin Ray, fourth at 220.

Pedro was a last minute addition to the tournament when the other half of the region only had three 220 pounders. He lost to teammate Ray in the opening round, but would win by an injury default to take third.
