Lions fail to place at state wrestling tournament

Lions' wrestlers eliminated from 5A state tourney
by: John Brewington OUT FAST—St. Helens’ Jerek Pense (right) won a 9-5 decision over Conner Rueth of Summit in his first match, but would lose the next two by decision.

The St. Helens Lions wrestled hard, but couldn't catch a break at the 5A state wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Lions sent eight wrestlers to state but four of them were eliminated in just two rounds: Andrew Duggan (120); Josh Bailey (160); Dustin Ford (195); and Nick Rohrig (285).

'We competed okay,' St. Helens coach and #8200;Mike McCoy said. 'We had a couple of matches that could have gone another way. Jonah Asher wrestled a state champion and was leading right up until the end of regulation. Then he came back and didn't wrestle quite as well.'

Asher (182) won his first match with a pin, then lost an overtime decision to the eventual state champion. Asher was eliminated with another decision.

Jon Luttrell (138) won his first round match before losing the next two. Jerek Pense (152), did the same, losing his last two in close decisions.

'We have to learn to bear down in an elimination tournament,' McCoy added. 'I think Duggan and Luttrell will come back next year with a little more experience and be a little more ready. We wrestled really, really well at district, but not so well at state.'
