Scappoose dominantes all three opponents at the 4-Way tournament

Ask anyone who's ever wrestled - getting your arm raised after a hard-fought match makes the blood (literally, in some cases), sweat and tears all worth it. And for many of the wrestlers in Scappoose, their arms must be getting a little tired.

The team continued their torrid start to the 2013-14 season last Friday, steamrolling each of their opponents at the Scappoose 4-Way tournament en route to a first-place finish, bumping their record to 9-3 on the season.

A week after a strong performance at the NW Duals in Hillsboro, the Indians picked things up in dominant fashion, scoring 46 unanswered points against Tigard with nine pins, only two losses and two forfeits. Senior Isaiah Goodrich, who has moved back down to the 182 division after starting the season at 195, capped the 46-point run with a second-round pin of Tigard’s Eli Neely. The Indians picked up another six points from Devin Ray’s pin at 220, putting the finishing touches on a 58-24 victory to kick things off.

Against Corvallis in their next dual of the day, Scappoose was equally as successful. Braxton Sue picked up his second win by fall in the 106 division, and though the Tribe didn’t get as many pins against Corvallis as against Tigard, the performance was just as dominant. Goodrich and Cody Erheart (145) each pinned their opponents with just seconds left in the first round, and Jonathan Tardif (170) and Cody Foumal (126) won by technical fall early in the third round. The end result saw Scappoose run away and hide, beating Corvallis 50-27 and moving on to the tournament finale.

A short handed Astoria team couldn’t begin to keep up with Scappoose, not registering a single team point outside of a forfeit until the last two matches, where the Fishermen picked up six points on a pair of decisions at 220 and 285. Colton Bush (120), Tardif and Goodrich each took less than a minute to pin their opponents, Goodrich needing just 14 seconds to pin Astoria’s Chase Jenkins. A double forfeit at 195 kept Astoria from picking up six points in any division other than 113, handing Scappoose a 53-12 victory in one of their strongest showings of the year.

Sue, who has lost only once this season - a 10-7 decision in the 106 bracket final in La Grande - extended his record to 12-1 (not including forfeits) with two pins in three outings last Friday morning. Goodrich continued his success after moving down a weight class, pinning all three of his opponents and stretching his record out to 13-1. Tardif also did well after moving down to 170, winning by fall in two of his three matches at the 4-Way, adding to his 15-2 record which includes 11 pins, three wins by major decision and one by technical fall.

Scappoose will look to build on their already solid season on Jan. 10-11, when they will compete in the PAC-RIM Armed Forces Classic in Seaside.
