Golf: St. Helens boys finding traction
The St. Helens boys' golf team is starting to gain traction leading up to the final month of the season. With the state championship fast approaching on May 19 and 20, the Lions picked up a second-place finishing on April 9 at the Glendoveer Golf Course, and finished third behind Wilsonville at Chahalem Glenn. Sherwood won both events, including their home event on Moday, April 14.
The team's performance at Glendoveer was especially impressive, scoring 327 points, just 19 behind Sherwood in spite of struggling on a wet course for much of the day. Jacob Roxey took fifth place overall, shooting a 79 to lead St. Helens. Eric Aldridge and Michael Hewlett each shot 82s, with Cody Teyema and Jordan Roark shooting 84 and 89 respectively.
The Lions faced another difficult task with a visit to Chahalem Glen, a tough course that has brought about struggles over the last few seasons. Wilsonville took the upper hand, topping St. Helens by 13 points to claim second behind Sherwood. Roxy led the team once again, finishing with two birdies, a 3-putt par on a 508 yard par five and one of only three pars on the final hole of the course to finish with a team-best 84. Michael Hewlett and Jordan Roark each had 87, with Aldridge shooting an 88. Cody Teyema was just off the mark with a 90.
St. Helens will be back in action on April 23 with a visit to Quail Valley, hosted by Liberty High School at 11 a.m.
