The seventh-ranked Indians baseball team kept up their race for the top spot in the Cowapa League standings on Friday, thumping Tillamook 9-1 on the road and staying within a game in the win column of Astoria for the league lead.

Scappoose put up four runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a double from senior Hunter Hoyt to score Jake Ford, and Hoyt's steal of home a few minutes later. Steven Johnson knocked in a pair of RBIs later in the inning with a single to center field, scoring Kyler Mizee and senior Will Sprute.

Sprute also got the start on the mound, throwing five strikeouts and walking two in a complete-game victory for the Indians.

Scappoose had another offensive spurt in the top of the seventh. With Mizee waiting on first base and Owen Parsons at the plate, Mizee jumped on a mistake when the pitcher attempted a pick off, streaking to second. Parsons hit a ground ball toward second baseman Garrett Armstrong, but it was too hot to handle. Mizee rounded third and scored, and Parsons skipped first, scoring a few minutes later on a single from senior Robby Backus.

The Indians, thanks to a rain-soaked week that forced a major shift in the schedule, will play Tillamook in the home leg of their season series on Monday, April 28 at 5 p.m. before hosting Seaside on Tuesday.
