Scappoose bats their way to an 8-0 win over Tillamook, their fifth in a row
Scappoose baseball completed a sweep of Tillamook on Monday afternoon, shutting out the visiting Cheesemakers 8-0 for their fifth consecutive win, and 10th in the last 11 outings.
Senior Hunter Hoyt got the win on the mound, striking out four batters and giving up five hits, but it was the Indian defense that stepped up to solidify the sweep, setting the tone early in the first inning.
Tillamook had a runner on first and third, threatening to take a quick lead with pitcher Garrett Armstrong at the plate. Hoyt intentionally walked Armstrong to set up the defensive highlight of the game.
On the next at-bat, senior Matt Strang sent a hard grounder straight to the glove of shortstop Justin Hering, who kicked off a lightning double play to get outs at first and second, leaving Tillamooks runner stranded on third as the inning came to a close.
Hoyt allowed just three more hits the rest of the way, scoring two runs himself amidst rallies in the third and sixth innings to push the Indians past Tillamook.
Kyler Mizee had two RBIs on two hits to lead Scappoose on offense.
Scappoose will host Seaside (1-12, 0-6 Cowapa) on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. The Seagulls are in the middle of a 12-game losing streak after beating Fort Vancouver High School in the season opener.
