Individual performances highlight Milwaukie track meet

Team effort lags, but several individuals excel in events

The St. Helens High boys' and girls' track squads were a bit short on the team points side of things against Milwaukie, but got some decent individual efforts.

'The Milwaukie (meet) didn't go well for the Lions,' St. Helens Coach Gerry Tinkle said. 'We gave up too many points in the sprints in the boys' races and too many points in the distances in the girls. Milwaukie boys and girls are very good, though.'

The April 4 meet was the first scored and first league meet of the season for St. Helens. Three weeks earlier they competed in the Polar Bear Invitational at Westview High.

Tinkle added, 'Ryan Byrd, Alex Lull and Will Lawrence continue to do well in the boys' running events. Jake Ramiskey had a good day in the jumps and we are starting to take some points in the throws. The girls are doing well in the throws too. Newcomers Regan Duarte and Chelsea Rennie are throwing the shot and discus very well for being new to the events.'

Individual boys' event winners included Byrd in the 1,500 and 3,000, Lawrence in the 400, Lull in the 800, Thomas Hughes in the 300 hurdles, Ramiskey in the high jump, and Levi Luttrell with a 12-foot pole vault. The 4x400 relay team of Byrd, Hughes, Lawrence, and Lull also took first.

For the girls, Duarte had a first in the shot, Rennie was first in the discus, Kylie Reinholdt won the high jump and the triple jump, and Lucy Kyle-Milward won the pole vault.

The Lions host two meets this week: a dual meet with Wilsonville on Wednesday, and the 16-team Lower Columbia Invitational at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 14.
