Wilsonville rolls over St. Helens track teams

Neither boys nor girls can keep pace with visitors
by: John Brewington RUNNING AWAY—St. Helens' Ryan Byrd easily outdistanced the field to win the 800 meter run Wednesday. He also turned in the best 5A 1,500 meter time in the state Saturday at the Lower Columbia Invitational.

There wasn't a lot to note in the St. Helens Lions meet with Wilsonville on Wednesday night.

'Wilsonville was a very good team, both the boys and girls, and we weren't,' St. Helens track coach Gerry Tinkle said.

'We got swept in some events and you can't win meets giving away that many points. Our sprinters always start the season with unimpressive times, but finish very strong. It will be that way again this year.'

Tinkle said the Lions will be a different team by district.

Top efforts for the St. Helens boys included an impressive first by Ryan Byrd in the 800 and a first by the 4x400 relay team of Thomas Hughes, Will Lawrence, Alex Lull and Byrd. Jake Ramiskey also added a first in the triple jump for St. Helens.

The only first for the girls came in the pole vault by Lucy Kyle-Milward.

St. Helens is at Parkrose for a dual this week, and will participate in the Wilsonville Rotary Invitational on Saturday.
