St. Helens boys track team second at Wilsonville Invite

St. Helens gets four firsts and a second in big meet
by: John Brewington 400 WINNER–St. Helens’ Will Lawrence won the 400 meter run at the Wilsonville Rotary Invitational on Saturday.

The St. Helens Lions turned in four first-place finishes, a second, and several other scoring efforts to take second in the Wilsonville Rotary Invitational on Saturday.

Will Lawrence was first in the 400, Ryan Byrd won the 1,500, Dumitri Malnasi had the top high jump effort (6-feet, 4-inches), and Austin Sandford won the pole vault. They got a second from Nick Dummer in the javelin. The Lions also added five top 10 finishes in other events.

'We didn't try to win it,' St. Helens Coach Gerry Tinkle said. 'Instead we put athletes in events that will be best for them and getting ready for district. Things just came together for us Saturday. I was surprised as anyone that we were second, not that I think we weren't capable of being there. The bigger the meet the better we will do, although we might be challenged at Centennial.'

He added, 'There were a lot of standouts. My boy high jumpers were impressive-6-4, 6-0, 6-0. That hasn't happened since 2005. Ryan Byrd looked relaxed in the 1,500. Kylie Reinholdt in the (triple jump). We are getting points from our throwers, too. It has been a few years since our throwers performed so well. Will (Lawrence) had a good 400. Nick Dummer had a great toss in the javelin. That give us two throwers over 160-feet (Nathan Reed is the other). Chelsee Rennie had a good discus throw. On the track there were a lot of PRs. It is amazing what a little sun can do.'

Scappoose also competed in the meet. The Tribe boys' top finishes were a second in the 400 by Stephen Bowe, and a third in the 4x400 relay.

Leading the Lady Lions at the meet was Kylie Reinholdt with a first in the triple jump, nearly two feet ahead of second. She also added two other top 10 finishes, and a relay race top 10. Lucy Kyle-Milward was fourth in the pole vault.

The Scappoose girls got a fourth from Charlie Davidson in the 800, a third from Heather White in the discus, a fifth from the 4x400 relay team, and a sixth from Tia Carnahan in the 1,500.

St. Helens will host Rex Putnam this Wednesday, while Scappoose has their first home meet against Yamhill-Carlton on Thursday.
