Important week in NWOC softball race
St. Helens is right in the middle of the fight for title
It's a crucial week in the Northwest Oregon Conference softball race with important games looming all week long.
With a 3-1 record, including two big wins, the St. Helens Lady Lions find themselves right in the heart of the battle for the league title.
Five teams are still very much in the race with just one game separating four of them. Only Sandy is still unbeaten at 5-0. They came from a run down to beat St. Helens 10-9 in the league opener. Rex Putnam, St. Helens and Liberty each have just one loss. The Lady Lions beat Putnam 4-2 in a nine-inning classic. Wilsonville has only two losses and is still very much in the mix.
By the end of the week, one or two teams could emerge as the leaders or more likely the league will remain a five-team race. Of note is that the NWOC standings don't have as much meaning towards playoffs as in the past. The Oregon School Activities Association rankings mean more. Four league teams are in the top 12 in the state at present.
St. Helens has four games in a row, starting Tuesday, all on the road and none of them will be cakewalks.
The Lady Lions face Parkrose on Tuesday, Sherwood on Wednesday, and then have a make-up game with Liberty on Thursday. They start the second-half of the league at Sandy on Friday.
Big NWOC games this week include: Tuesday-Sandy at Putnam, Liberty at Wilsonville; Wednesday-Liberty at Sandy, Putnam at Wilsonville; Thursday-St. Helens at Liberty; Friday-St. Helens at Sandy.
