Lady Indians top Mooks for first league wins

Lady Indians still have some work to do to get back in league race
by: John Brewington ONLY RUN—Scappoose’s Amara Templin slides into home for the Tribe’s only run in their 9-1 loss to Yamhill-Carlton on Monday night.

Wet weather and a lack of practice time outside the gym have wreaked havoc with the Scappoose High softball team this season.

After losing their first three league games, the team got back on track Friday with two easy wins over Tillamook. Two days earlier the team gave up two games to Banks.

YC tops Scappoose

The Scappoose Lady Indians got off to a slow start and never recovered in a 9-1 home loss to Yamhill-Carlton on Monday.

YC took the lead with four runs in the first and Scappoose couldn't get back in the game.

'The kids are moving forward,' Scappoose Coach Dean Smith said. 'They are going to be alright.'

The Tribe held Tillamook scoreless in the first game; pounding out 15 runs on 11 hits in the contest. They scored three runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, and finished with seven runs in the seventh. Lexi Courtney had two homers on the day, was two for four, scored three times and had a walk. Molly Reardon went four for four with two doubles and a run scored. Sophia Hart was two for three with a double and a run scored.

Scappoose scored in the first inning of the second game, held a 4-2 lead after three, and then pushed five runs across in the fifth to ice the game.

Cassidy Hoglund and Sophia Hart were both three for five in the game. Two of Hoglund's hits were doubles. Hart had one.

Against Banks on Wednesday, Scappoose had trouble getting runners on base and had only one hit. Still, they trailed just 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Banks took advantage of two walks, added five hits, including a double and a triple, and scored six times. The Tribe struck out eight times in the game.

Scappoose got the first run of the second game when Hart singled and scored on a double by Hoglund. It was the last run they would get. Banks poured eight runs across the plate in the second and three more in the third on their way to the win.

The Lady Indians hosted Yamhill-Carlton in a make-up on Monday, had Seaside at home on Tuesday, and hosts Astoria in a doubleheader Friday.
