Lions play better in baseball series with Liberty

Baseball team still hasn't won, but starting to show signs of life

After a rainy week and soaked fields for both teams, St. Helens and Liberty got in their three games under sunny skies Saturday and Monday.

Neither team had been able to get a field ready during last week's steady downpour, but they met up at Liberty Saturday for a doubleheader make-up under sunny skies. The third game was played Monday in St. Helens.

Liberty pushed three runs across the plate in the first inning, but the Lions were able to respond, tying up the contest.

Wyatt Mosley led off for St. Helens with a single, and then after an out Tyler Stewart singled to score him. Drake Mosley was hit by a pitch, and Cody Galvin followed with a single to score one more. A single by Brennan Norton would send Mosley home.

St. Helens would get runners on base in five of the next six innings, but couldn't come up with a clutch hit to score anyone. Liberty would score four runs in the fourth to take control.

The Lions could muster just four hits in the nightcap but three times got runners into scoring position. Liberty got two in the first inning and then added three more in the fifth for their scoring in the 5-0 shutout. Nine Lions would strike out in the contest.

The two teams met in St. Helens on Monday and it was a very close game for five innings. Liberty scored the first run of the game in the fifth off a double and two singles.

St. Helens responded with a run to knot the score again. Brandon Underwood was hit by a pitch to give him first base. He advanced on a single by Josh Keller and scored on an error. Keller would be out in a play at the plate. The Lions had the bases loaded when the last out was made.

Four errors and three singles allowed Liberty to score five times in the sixth, putting the game away.

The Lions were to travel to Milwaukie on Tuesday, host the Mustangs on Wednesday, and travel there again Friday. Next week they have two games at home with Parkrose and one away.
