Volleyball: St. Helens headed to state title match
The Lions upset No. 1 Lebanon in four games, and will play in the title match with La Salle at 6 p.m.
St. Helens knew coming into the state championship tournament on Friday morning that, in order to reach the title match, they'd need to pick up a pair of upsets against two of the top-ranked teams in all of Class 5A.
Friday morning, the Lions picked up the first leg with a five-set win over Summit. Friday evening, St. Helens beat No. 1 Lebanon in four sets to advance to the state championship for the first time in school history.
Riding momentum from their thrilling victory earlier that morning, St. Helens powered through Lebanon 25-22 and put the Warriors on their heels.
Lebanon, who lost only once all season and was perfect other than a 2-1 loss to Class 6A Lake Oswego, suddenly found themselves in a precarious position. Excluding the loss to Lake Oswego on Sept. 27, the Warriors had only dropped the first set of a match on one occasion.
A slightly shocked and angry Lebanon squad rallied to take the second set 25-19, but the Lions, ever focused and mentally tough, didn't give. St. Helens won the third set 25-21 and inched past Lebanon 25-23 in the fourth and final frame.
St. Helens will face NW Oregon Conference rival La Salle at 6 p.m. on Nov. 8 for all the marbles, the 2014 Class 5A state title, at Liberty High School. The Lions and Falcons split their two meetings this season, with La Salle winning the first 3-1, and St. Helens sweeping La Salle on Oct. 6.
