It didn't take Matt Morgan long to find the administrative role he dreamed of.
The St. Helens athletic director of three years will become The Dalles High School's athletic director and one of two vice principals when fall practices begin on Aug. 14.
Morgan, despite requests from a handful of parents to stay, resigned upon completion of the spring season after finding himself in disagreement with Lions administration regarding his assessment of the the girls' basketball program.
"This is a promotion because I'm officially administrative," said Morgan, 48, of Burns, who had The Dalles, Pendleton and Hood River on his radar and will supervise career and technical education and evaluate certified teachers. "This is what I've been working for my whole career ... I'm excited that, after all these years in administration and licensure, this will be my first appointment."
Morgan announced his acceptance of his new role via email on Friday, July 21, and the Lions have yet to hire a new athletic director.
St. Helens boys' and girls' soccer are scheduled to host and visit the Riverhawks, respectively, on Sept. 21, and boys' basketball is to open the season in The Dalles and the girls are to host the Riverhawks on Dec. 15.
"We are currently screening applications and plan to interview in the next couple weeks with hopes to make a job offer before the middle of August," St. Helens School District superintendent Scot Stockwell wrote in an email. "Schedules for both games and officials are developed in the spring, so we should be set to start the fall sports season."
