Law enforcement personnel will run kids race in memory of Rainier police chief killed in performance of his duties in January 2011

RALPH PAINTER MEMORIAL RUN - The Ralph Painter Memorial 5k, 10k and kids runs honor Rainier police chief Ralph Painter, who was killed in the line of duty in January 2011.RALPH PAINTER MEMORIAL RUN - All are invited to a 10k, 5k and, with law enforcement personnel in full duty gear, a kids race to honor the memory of Rainier Police Department chief Ralph Painter, who was killed in performance of his duties in Jan. 2011, on Saturday at Rainier High School.

Runners may register at www.uberthons.com/ralph-painter-home. Race packets, medals for all participants and pancakes courtesy of the St. Helens Oregon Performing Arts Studio will be served.

Dogs are welcome in all three runs, but children's strollers must follow the 5k route.

Races include chip timing with instant posted results, pre- and post-race refreshments and raffle prizes.

The 10k is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., the 5k is set for 8:45 a.m., and the kids race starts at 9:45 a.m.

The first half of the 10k follows the high school track and leads "into the woods for a beautiful, well-marked trail run. You will run through tall trees with shade and through open fields, [and it returns to the track]."

The 5k starts on the track and turns to "paved road through beautiful Columbia County countryside, [with] one large hill at the beginning with flat and downhill terrain the rest of [the way, and it] ends at the high school."

Painter, the website recalls, was a cross country and track and field star in his time at St. Helens High School, and continued his running pursuits while he worked for a degree in criminal justice at Clackamas Community College from 1974-76.

He joined the Rainier Police Department in 1988 and ran to second in the 1990 Police & Firemen's Olympics mile and half-mile in Canada.

Painter joined Hood to Coast Relays and trained for the Portland Marathon as he promised to run it with his daughter, Jennifer, but fell in the line of duty before the dream could come true.

All of Saturday's proceeds benefit a scholarship fund for Columbia County high school seniors.
