GLORY DAYS: St. Helens girls' soccer Alumni begin Maye-Strawn Trophy defense
This year's Maye-Strawn Trophy winner will enjoy a St. Helens Girls' Soccer Alumni Game celebration and the all-time series lead at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Doc Ackerson Stadium.
Saturday's stars are yet to be announced, but the Alumni won 2-1 last year after the Preps pitched a 3-0 shutout in 2015.
"Seeing all the old faces and reconnecting [is the best part]," Lions coach Simon Date said. "It's also important for the current group to remember and appreciate what they have now when they hear what it was like back then."
The trophy honors the memory of Elizabeth Maye, the mother of Brie Maye (midfielder, Class of 2013) and Amanda Maye-Strawn, the mother of Stevie Strawn (wing, Class of 2014) who passed away in a car accident in 2014.
The Alumni will have to break the Preps' iron line of, should they be available, senior goalkeeper Morgan Bingaman and senior defenders Sidney Allen, Emily Davis, Emilia Reardon and Sarah Bjork.
Prep Kennady Brown (a junior) can patrol the midfield, and Kaela Lee (a junior), Kelsey Elliott and Mackenzie Carlson (sophomores) stand to lead the attack.
The Lions, who are yet to win a state championship, have not reached the Class 5A postseason since 2007 but made play-in appearances from 2010-2012 and in 2014.
