Kaela Lee sparks St. Helens soccer Alumni to Maye-Strawn Trophy repeat
Kaela Lee was in the right place at the right time twice in the third St. Helens Girls' Soccer Alumni Game.
The junior forward-to-be scored for the Preps early in the first period, then switched sides and beat the Prep defense 22 minutes later as the Alumni scored three goals in a row for 3-1 win and a Maye-Strawn Trophy repeat on Saturday, Aug. 5, at Doc Ackerson Stadium.
"I liked playing with my high school team because it was great preparation for the upcoming season and to see how we play together as a team with new players," Lee said. "Playing with the Alumni was fun as it allowed me to play with some of my former teammates once again since I haven't seen them since last season."
The Trophy, in its third year, honors the memory of Elizabeth Maye, the mother of Brie Maye (midfielder, Class of 2013) and Amanda Maye-Strawn, the mother of Stevie Strawn (wing, Class of 2014), both of whom passed away in a car accident in 2014.
"We let [the Preps] make mistakes and we didn't chase," Stevie Strawn said.
The Preps lay siege to the Alumni box early, and Lee got through 7 minutes and 40 seconds into the game.
Lee joined the short-handed Alumni and helped them spread the field and breeze down the Prep sideline time and again, and she nailed the equalizer with 10:20 left in the first.
Gabby Hora (midfielder, Class of 2016) created her shot and a goal in the second, and Sarah Bjork, a senior defender-to-be also lending her talents to the Alumni, rebounded a corner kick from the left for a score.
"We were doing our best to contain toward the end of the game, and we looked for openings," said Regan Duarte, a center midfielder of the Class of 2013. "It's cool to keep in touch with everyone."
The Alumni Game was the Preps' last fun summer event, according to Lions coach Date, before they hit the road for the Astoria Jamboree set for this weekend, and the first day of fall practice is set for Aug. 14.
The Lions will strive to reach the Class 5A play-in round for the first time since 2014.
"It was about reconnecting with kids who played for us, and they're friends now," Date said. "No stress, just fun."
