St. Helens Sports Booster Club will induct nine to Hall of Fame in 2017
Nine former St. Helens High School student-athletes will be inducted into the St. Helens Sports Booster Club's Hall of Fame on Sept. 16, the Club announced on Tuesday.
"As a club, we look forward to honoring several very deserving individuals," said Kyle Boggs of the Boosters. "Their accomplishments, not only at St. Helens High School but after graduating as well, should be commended and rewarded. We hope they give today's students something to strive for."
The 2017 inductees are:
Ryan Byrd (Class of 2012)
Byrd ran to all-state honors in cross country and track, and won a state championship in the 1,500-meter run as a senior.
Will Lawrence (Class of 2012)
Lawrence was a four-sport athlete in soccer, cross country, swimming, and track, in the latter of which he was twice an all-state talent.
Molly Bailey (Class of 2007)
Bailey played soccer to all-league recognition as a junior, and was all-state and twice all-league in track.
Upon graduation, she excelled in lacrosse at Pacific University in Forest Grove.
James Taylor (Class of 2007)
Taylor played football, wrestled to all-state praise and ran track.
Upon graduating, he earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School in West Point, N.Y.
Megan Hoyt Cox (Class of 2003)
Cox was a three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and track, and an all-league sprinter for the latter.
Emily Wallis (Class of 2002)
Wallis was an all-leaguer in basketball and softball.
Jeremy Cox (Class of 1998)
Cox was all-state in basketball and helped to quarterback the Lions to their 1996 state championship.
Steven Dubois (Class of 1998)
Dubois earned All-League honors in football, basketball, and baseball.
Gary Edwards (Class of 1972)
Edwards was an all-league talent in baseball, and he excelled in football and basketball. He went on to play college baseball and was an accomplished softball coach.
The 2017 Hall of Fame class will be celebrated with public festivities scheduled for 5:30 p.m., a steak dinner at 6 p.m., and a ceremony at 7 p.m. at the St. Helens Elks Lodge, where tickets will be available for $20 at the door.
The Ken Bailey Memorial Golf Tournament, a four-man scramble in honor of the late St. Helens High athletic director, will follow the next day with a 7:30 a.m. check-in, an 8 a.m. shotgun start and plenty of prizes on Sept. 17 at Wildwood Golf Course in Portland.
Individuals may participate for $80, and a team of four can sign up for $320.
