The Indians, the 2017 Class 4A state champions, took another important step in their 2018 journey, tying for second place in the Cowapa League tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks on Monday.

"We lucked out with the weather and conditions — it stayed nice for the majority of the round — … (and) we played well," said Scappoose coach Weston Powers.

Scappoose shot 331 for the 18-hole tournament, tying Seaside, while Valley Catholic won the event with a 318. Next up, the Indians return to Quail Valley for the regional tournament on Monday and Tuesday, with the top three team finishers advancing to the Class 4A state tournament. State will be held May 14-15 at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Redmond.

While Tillamook's Carter Lee took the individual title with a 77, Scappoose sophomore Chase Elliott was close behind in second place with a 78.

The rest of the Indians were solid, too, with senior Jake Gray carding an 81, followed by junior Jaden Holmason at 93, senior Jack Eggers at 87 and senior Lucas Elliott at 85.

Now, the Indians say they're ready to step up and score at the regional qualifying tournament. "If we place top three in regionals we will punch our ticket to the state tournament," Powers said.

The complete team scores included: Valley Catholic 318; Scappoose 331; Seaside 331; Banks 356; Astoria 377; Tillamook 485.
