Sherwood's former police chief has become the first to file for mayor in the Nov. 6 election.

Bill Middleton, who served as the city's police chief for 13 years, filed Friday, according to City Recorder Sylvia Murphy.

Earlier this year, Middleton announced plans that he would soon retire as police chief of the city of Carlton and would also be retiring from the U.S. Army.

Middleton originally filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against the city in May 2008 claiming that Sherwood leaders purposely demoted him while he was serving on active duty in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He later told his story on the weekly news magazine show "60 Minutes" in a segment involving people who had returned from military service and were having problems with their employers.

In 2009, the suit was settled for $250,000. The city at the time said the settlement was not an admission of guilt and the city effectively paid only $2,500 in out-of-pocket costs, the deductable for the insurance premiums, to settle the suit.

Mayor Keith Mays has said he will soon file for re-election. Mays has served as mayor since 2005.

Meanwhile, three Sherwood City Council seats – Position No. 4 held by Linda Henderson, Position No. 5 held by Krisanna Clark and Position No. 6 held by Robyn Folsom – are open as well.

Basic requirements for both the mayoral and council seats include: being a registered Oregon voter, being at least 18 years old and having resided in the city limits for at least 12 months.

Deadline to apply is Aug. 24 at 5 p.m.
