Crash on Scholls-Sherwood leads to arrest of three men

Authorities arrested three people after they crashed a car in a remote area of Washington County near Sherwood Dec. 23.

Just before 6 a.m., a Tualatin police officer was driving along Southwest Scholls-Sherwood Road in rural Washington County, returning to the Tualatin Police Station from a trip to the county jail, when they noticed four men walking along the side of the road and a vehicle crashed into a tree near a sharp turn.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department the four men were in the car at the time of the crash. But when a deputy stopped to investigate, the four men began to run.

A Tualatin officer detained one man, Nicholas Bongirono, 20, of Tigard, who was injured in the crash and required medical attention.

Bongirono had an outstanding warrant for his arrest after violating his parole.

Nearby Sherwood police and Washington County deputies stopped two other men involved in the crash. One man, Christopher Morgan, 21, of Milwaukie, was carrying a concealed weapon without a valid permit and was arrested. The other man was not charged in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Daniel Steffen, of Tigard, was arrested after a police K-9 team began a search of the area. Steffen faces charges of hit and run after crashing the vehicle into the tree.

All three men were lodged in the Washington County Jail.
