Defilippis presents noted drama at St. Francis

Actor will perform Gospel according to St. Luke at St. Francis Catholic Church

by: COURTESY ST. LUKE PRODUCTIONS - ST. FRANCIS-BOUND - Actor Leonardo Defilippis performs in 'The Passion According to Saint Luke.'Actor Leonardo Defilippis of Saint Luke Productions brings his unique one-man performance of The Passion According to Saint Luke to St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood on Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to experience this professional production

Unlike other pageant-style productions or films on Christ’s Passion, where realism is the goal, Defilippis’ performance relies on the power of the “Word of God” to penetrate the heart of each individual audience member. The script is taken word-for-word from the Gospel According to Saint Luke, and is enhanced by a set, lights and original musical score. The actor uses only a few simple props and a cape to recreate the compelling story of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, His anguished night in the Garden of Gethsemane, His agonizing death on the Cross, and finally His glorious Resurrection from the dead.

“When Leonardo was on the cross, and spoke to the two criminals hanging in crucifixion beside Him, I felt profoundly what God has done for me, how he has forgiven me,” Debbie Bloomfield of Wyandotte, Mich., said during one performance.

Defilippis believes the simplicity of the production enhances the experience. “Everyone has a personal image of Jesus in his mind. I felt that if I tried for realism, I would always fall short. By merely suggesting the setting and characters surrounding these profound events, focus is directed towards an interior encounter with Jesus Himself. My job is to get out of the way, so that the Holy Spirit can touch souls. It is a very humbling experience.”

Defilippis is the master of the one-man performance, and is also known for directing and starring in the feature film Thérèse, which generated a phenomenal grassroots success during its year-long run in theaters.

A free-will offering will be taken. For more information, contact Veronica at the St. Francis parish office at 503-625-6185. For more information about Saint Luke Productions, visit stlukeproductions.com. The church is located at 15651 S.W. Oregon St.
