More than a dozen Tigard, Tualatin and Sherwood residents were running in the Boston Marathon on Monday, the site of two explosions which killed at least two people and injured more than 100 others.

According to the Boston Marathon’s website, 14 runners from Tigard, Tualatin and Sherwood were competeing in this year’s race. Nearly all of them had crossed the finish line before the explosions began.

SaxtonThe runners included Rob Saxton, a Sherwood resident and the Oregon’s deputy superintendent of public instruction. Saxton, who was competing in his third Boston marathon, told The Times on Monday he had finished the race about 50 minutes before the explosions and was back in his hotel about a half-mile away when he first got the news.

Saxton’s wife accompanied him on the trip and had spent the day around Boston, including near the John F. Kennedy Library, which also experienced an unrelated fire around that same time.

Saxton wasn’t the only Portland-area school leader competing in the marathon. Bill Rhoades, the superintendent of the West Linn-Willsonville School District was also competing in the marathon.

LaVineOf the 14 local residents, only two had not crossed the finish line by the time of the explosion.

One of those, Sherwood resident Michelle LaVine, told The Times she was at Mile 20 when the explosions occured and was unable to finish the race.

She entered the event after she fundraised thousands of dollars as part of the Dana-Arber Marathon Challenge Team.

LaVine, an administrative assistant at Capital One Financial in Tigard, had actively trained for the race since early December, having more than 18 weeks and 300 miles under her belt on race day.

“I have split my training this winter with outdoor runs along with some long treadmill runs at our local YMCA, 18 miles being the longest,” she wrote.

The second local resident unable to finish the race was 66-year-old Andrew Becker of Sherwood.

There has been no word on his condition.
