The Great Onion Festival arrives Oct. 12 at Archer Glen Elementary School

Bring Family and Friends to the Great Onion Festival

The onion will be exalted on Oct. 12 at Archer Glen Elementary for the 27th annual Great Onion Festival.

Plenty of food, on-stage entertainment, the Reptile Man, local arts, crafts, product and service vendors, games and prizes once again draw folks to this classic Sherwood event.by: STOCKXCHNG - The Onion Festival kicks off Saturday at Archer Glen Elementary School.

Over 100 years ago, Italian farmers settled in the Sherwood area and prospered with bumper onion crops from the high water level in Sherwood fields. The festival honors those farmers and the lowly, but ever so important onion. The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Sherwood Chamber of Commerce.

The Sherwood Old Town Rotary Club provides The Great Onion Festival menu of barbecue chicken, a baked onion, baked beans and cole slaw.

Amateur chefs are encouraged to bring their home made creations for judging in “The Best Dang Onion Dish,” and new this year citizens are encouraged to nominate themselves or friends to be crowned “King Onion” and “Queen Onion” of the festival. Recipe contestants should bring an ingredients list with their pre-cooked entry. The form for King and Queen nominations is available on the Chamber of Commerce website (www.sherwoodchamber.org).

Old favorites onion rolling and onion eating contests continue, along with face and pumpkin painting. Over 30 product, service and craft vendors will fill the Archer Glen gymnasium.

Dr. Ben Aanderud, chairman of the event said volunteers make the event happen and there are spots open for everything from slicing onions to serving meals. The festival is presented by Pacific Family Dental, Bittner Dentistry for Kids, and Wilson Orthodontics.

The Sherwood Chamber of Commerce offers a variety of Onion Festival sponsorships for businesses and organizations. For more information on business opportunities, or to volunteer, e-mail the Sherwood Chamber at chambersherwoodchamber.org.
