The rumor that a student may have had a weapon in the parking lot of the high school resulted in a lockout situation.

Sherwood High SchoolSherwood High School was placed in lockout mode today after rumors that someone in the parking lot had a gun inside his vehicle.

The incident began at 3:15 p.m. when police were called to the school regarding the report.

However, after an investigation, it was determined the weapon in question was an airsoft gun and not a threat to students. School officials were informed at 3:30 p.m. that the lockout was over.

Airsoft guns are replicas of real guns that shoot hard plastic pellets.

The incident began when one student began posting social media videos showing the student in his car holding the gun. After a search of the school parking lot, it was later determined the videos were made off-campus and not posted until the end of the day, according to a Sherwood Police Department release.COURTESY OF SHERWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT - A photo of the airsoft gun in question, which resulted in a lockout at SHS on Friday.

Since it was after-hours, school staff was asked to bring any students remaining at the school into buildings and lock the exterior doors.

Meanwhile, buses that had already left school were diverted away from the area where the police informed district officials that the subject was located.

Sherwood Schools regularly conduct drills for situations like this and lockouts are put in place by schools when there is a dangerous situation outside of the school buildings, according to school officials. All exterior doors are secured and students and staff are to remain in the building until the lockout is cleared by police and/or district staff.
