Sherwood woman becomes first in family to receive college degree
Deborah Grace graduates from University Of Phoenix Oregon campus
Sherwood resident Deborah Grace recently achieved a significant personal milestone when she became the first member of her family to graduate with a college degree.
Pursuing a higher education was not always easy for Grace, and she made several personal sacrifices along the way, but she persevered and obtained a bachelor of science in business management from the University of Phoenix Oregon campus.
When I first started classes, I was a single parent trying to balance a full-time job, provide for my family and attend classes after work, said Grace. I knew that meeting my responsibilities at home, while also staying motivated to excel in my studies would not always be easy, but I recognized that the investment would be completely worth it both professionally and personally.
Before starting classes at University of Phoenix, Grace had worked in the health care administration field for eight years. While she knew her professional experience was valuable, she also realized that without a college degree she would not be able to advance professionally.
Having high ambitions for a successful career, Grace decided to return to school and pursue a bachelors degree in business, with the goal to take her career to the next level.
After starting her degree program, Grace re-married and became the sole breadwinner for her new, larger family. While in school, she held two jobs, which made maintaining her studies and parental duties challenging, but Grace was determined to finish her degree program.
After I graduated with my degree I saw an immediate return on my investment, she said. Within a week of graduating, I received a promotion and pay raise from my employer. My degree has not only helped me professionally, but it has also given me the personal confidence I needed to be able to excel in my career. I am so grateful to University of Phoenix for the flexible learning environment, the opportunities my business degree has provided and the support I received from the faculty and staff.
At University of Phoenix, our primary mission is to prepare working adults to thrive in the changing global economy, said Flint Holland, campus director for the University of Phoenix Oregon campus. Deborah is a true testament of our mission, and I commend her for her hard work and pursuit of her goals.
