Sherwood’s annual Give n’ Gobble is set to continue filling hungry bellies in our area through 2013. That’s right, this one-day event is not only a fun and healthy way to kick off your metabolism with friends and family on Thanksgiving morning, but it also funds our local food bank all year long.

Thanks to overwhelming community support, this event has literally helped put an end to hunger at the local level, it also funds the much needed backpack program. This heart-warming initiative provides backpacks filled with nutritious food to school children who don’t have enough food to eat over the weekend.

“Tears filled my eyes when I learned that children were coming to school starving on Monday mornings because their last meal was the school lunch on Friday! As a mom of three this fact hit my heart hard and I became more committed to this event than ever. No child should ever have to feel that kind of hunger” said Cindy Aggson, Give n’ Gobble founder and owner of Carpe Viam Marketing, a Sherwood-based marketing agency. “In many cases, the only meal that a child gets is from the free or reduced meal program at school. Now these children can pick up a backpack at their school on Friday and know that they won’t go hungry that weekend.”

For the sixth Thanksgiving in a row, runners, walkers and volunteers will fill the Sherwood High School Stadium at 9 a.m. on Nov. 22 in efforts to raise money and food donations for Helping Hands, a local food bank affiliated with the Oregon Food Bank. To continue the tradition, there will be a 5K run/walk, a 10K run, and community food drive.

According to event director, and Prudential real estate agent, Shelly Rath, “Last year, the stadium was packed with over 2,000 participants...most of whom were wearing bright orange turkey visors and crazy turkey hats. To date, the Give n’ Gobble has raised $80,000 and 12 tons of food, feeding thousands of people since it’s inception. We are excited to make this the best year yet and blow away our goal to break the $100,000 mark!”
