Sherwood pair in Y's Teen Leadership program create volunteer projects for Y's Teen Center Ambassadors

COURTESY SHERWOOD YMCA - YMCA Teen Center Ambassadors, led by Jack Murphy and Mathew Charters, volunteered to plant 800 trees, along with serving in a soup kitchen and creating care packages for homeless individuals shown here. Jack Murphy and Mathew Charters are members of the Sherwood Regional Family YMCA who are using their leadership skills to create a positive impact for their community as part of the Y's Teen Leadership program.

In this program, teens discover a service area that they are passionate about.

Murphy and Charters had many communities in mind where they wanted to make a difference: homeless, the environment, leading young people into volunteerism, and serving others. In the Teen Leadership program they had the opportunity reach their goals and impact all of these communities.

The pair created volunteer projects for the Y's Teen Center Ambassadors, a group of 18 teens who partnered with Friends of Trees and planted over 800 trees and shrubs in Wilsonville Park.

COURTESY SHERWOOD YMCA - YMCA Teen Center Ambassadors helped create 90 hygiene kits for homeless people.Another project was partnering with Hope Diner, which serves meals every Sunday in the Old Hall at St. Francis Church. Volunteers from St. Francis and other area churches take turns hosting the weekly event where they cook and serve hot meals while also partnering with OregonASK, an organization that advocates for quality out-of-school time programs and activities, to create 90 homeless care packages.

In the past five months, Murphy and Charters have impacted countless communities and aren't stopping now.

Not only do they realize the volunteerism and serving their community builds a stronger, more connected world, they know firsthand the Y's Teen Center has a foundation for serving the community.

Deryk Astilla is teen center supervisor for the Sherwood YMCA.
