Bowmen rule doubles at district

Sherwood to be well represented at the Class 5A tourney


BEAVERTON — When it came to doubles competition at the Northwest Oregon Conference district tennis tournament, it seemed to be all Sherwood, all the time.

Meanwhile, on the boys side, it was an all-Sherwood championship match.

This all means that the Bowmen squads will be well represented at the Class 5A state tournament.

The top four placing singles players and doubles teams from the district tournament advance to the state event, which starts today (Thursday) and runs through Saturday at the Portland Tennis Center and the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

For the Sherwood girls, the team of seniors Courtney Mostul and Nancy Nguyen will be competing at the state event as the NWOC district champions for the second straight year.

At the district event, Mostul and Nguyen posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over teammates Hannah Huntington and Amy Otis in the semifinals. Then, in the district title match, Mostul and Nguyen downed teammates Carley Mills and Kelsey Niebergall 6-4, 6-2.

Mills and Niebergall got to the finals by getting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over teammates Bryce Keicher and Lydia Ng in the semifinals.

In the district third-place match, Huntington and Otis downed Keicher and Ng 6-2, 6-1.

All four of those Lady Bowmen teams move on to the state tourney.

Mostul and Nguyen, who finished in third place at last year’s state tournament, are the No. 2 seeds for this year’s tourney. They’ll face either Lindsay Pautsch and Ellie Cole of West Albany or Karly Barnhard and Elena Cooper in a first-round match.

Mills and Niebergall will face either Carrie Huang and Ann Santich of Crescent Valley or Ariel Steele and Morgan DeMayer of Summit in a first-round contest. Huntington and Otis will play Kiana Jensen and Olivia Caldwell of Churchill today in a qualifying-round contest. Ng and Keicher will face Madison Cole and Richelle Mockler-Martens of Cleveland in a qualifying-round match.

Sherwood freshman Allison Schwarm earned a state tourney bid in singles competition, as she placed fourth at the district event. She’ll face Ashland sophomore Anne Kim in a qualifying-round match today.

On the boys side at the NWOC district tournament, the Sherwood team of seniors Colton Baker and Alec Wisthoff scored a 6-4, 7-5 victory over teammates Grant McLaughlin and Carson Donnelly in the championship match.

Baker and Wisthoff will open state tourney play today with a first-round match against Max Burt and Michael Montes of Ashland. McLaughlin and Donnelly will face fourth-seeded Jonathan Colner and Ben Lucke of Cleveland in a first-round match.

Boys state tournament play will be held at the Portland Tennis Center today and Friday before moving to Tualatin Hills on Saturday. Girls tourney play will be held at Tualatin each day, with play starting at 9 a.m.
