Bowmen teams run to victory

Sherwood takes the top spots at the NWOC preview meet


FAIRVIEW — If a district preview cross country meet, held prior to mid-September, means anything, then it could be a heck of a season for the Sherwood High School cross country teams.

The Bowmen squads showed that they are ready to run this year, as they sprinted to first-place finishes in the team standings at the Northwest Oregon Conference District Preview Meet, held Sept. 11 at Blue Lake Park.

Sherwood took the top spot in the boys team standing at the event with 42 points, putting the Bowmen 10 points ahead of second-place Wilsonville and 12 points above third-place St. Helens.

Sherwood senior Ryan Pierce ran to victory in the boys varsity race in a time of 17 minutes and 37 seconds for the 5,000-meter event, putting him 6 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Bryan Strang of St. Helens.

Bowmen juniors Joshua Moats and Connor McLaughlin also placed in the top 10. Moats ran to fifth place in a time of 18:01 and McLaughlin was eighth at 18:09.

Also for the Sherwood boys, senior Olsen Cottle was 14th at 18:30, junior Matthew Brooks was 16th at 19:00, junior Fred Resch was 21st at 19:25 and sophomore Ryan Chidlaw was 25th at 19:46.

The Lady Bowmen placed first in the girls team standings with a score of 41 points. Wilsonville took second place with a mark of 53.

The Sherwood girls, as usual, boasted a strong pack of runners, as they had six of the top 13 finishers in the race.

Junior Madison Budge was the first Lady Bowmen runner across the finish line. She took fifth place with a time of 21:57.

Senior Avery Rosenbalm was close behind in seventh place with a mark of 22:15.

Sherwood junior Bridgett Palmer was eighth at 22:28, senior Samantha Stewart was ninth at 22:35, junior Sam Mckibbon was 12th at 22:57, junior Morgan Lite was 20th at 23:38 and junior Sarah Kotel was 32nd at 26:33.

Wilsonville senior Taryn Rawlings won the varsity girls race in a time of 19:48.

On Saturday, the Bowmen teams ran at the Saxon Invite, held at Bush Park in Salem.

The Sherwood girls finished in fourth place (out of 14 schools) in the team standing with a score of 120. State powerhouse Summit took first place with a score of 21.

Budge finished in 23rd place, individually, with a time of 20:42. Mckibbon was one spot behind her with a mark of 20:57.

Also for the Lady Bowmen, Rosenbalm was 29th at 21:11, junior Molly Fettig was 30th at 21:13 and Stewart was 33rd at 21:26.

The Sherwood boys finished in fifth place in the team standings with a score of 168. Summit placed first with a total of 29.

Pierce finished in 13th place with a time of 16:42.

Also for the Bowmen, Moats was 24th at 17:12, McLaughlin was 34th at 17:37, Cottle was 44th at 17:45 and Brooks was 60th with a mark of 18:19.

The Sherwood teams will be back in action Saturday when they run at the Northwest Classic, which will be held at Lane Community College in Eugene. On Wednesday, the Bowmen will compete at a four-way NWOC meet, which will be held at McCormick Park in St. Helens.
