Strong pitching, hitting lead Sherwood to 5-1 win

DALLAS — For the Sherwood High softball team, maybe it was all just a matter of putting things together at the right time.

And the right time was the start of postseason play.

The Lady Bowmen opened the postseason by scoring a 5-1 win at Dallas in a Class 5A play-in game played Friday at Dallas.

“The girls worked hard all season to get to this point,” Sherwood coach Jodi Moore said. “They have come together as a team, and I am very excited for them.”

With the win, Sherwood, the No. 5 team out of the Northwest Oregon Conference, improved to 9-16 on the season..

Sophomore Kaylee Smith was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bowmen in Friday’s game. She allowed just four hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Sherwood also played strong defense.

Freshman Elizabeth Zook helped lead the offensive attack. In the top of the first inning, she belted her first home run of the season. She also had a double to start the seventh inning.

Junior Allie Kuntz had two doubles, including a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Senior Hannah Zweig also doubled in the sixth inning and Smith added a key single in the fifth.

The Lady Bowmen were scheduled to play at Hood River Valley in a Class 5A state playoff first-round game on Wednesday. Results weren’t available when The Times went to press.
