Group seeking rails to trails project linking Washington, Yamhill counties

The Yamhelas Westsider Trail committee is trying to raise funds to buy an abandoned Union Pacific Railroad right of way for a “rails to trails” project.

The 17-mile rail line extends from McMinnville to the Hagg Lake turnoff north of Gaston in Washington County.

Organizers want to develop the railroad line for pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian use, and connect it to the Banks-Vernonia and Tillamook trails.

The committee is seeking grant funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation, and fears that if money isn’t procured, the railroad right of way will be broken up and sold in pieces, rendering it impossible to assemble the corridor for public use.
