Bike delivery service tests new electric motor

by: COURTESY OF ECOSPEED - New electric motor drive being tested locally.Portland’s B-Line Urban Delivery, which uses bicycles to distribute bread, produce and other cargo around town, is testing out a new motor drive system made by EcoSpeed, also based in Portland.

EcoSpeed designs and makes electric assists that convert bikes and trikes to electric vehicles.

EcoSpeed’s new motor powers the bike chain to leverage all the gears of the bike. It’s rated at 1 horsepower, enabling B-Line to legally continue using bike lanes and bike paths to make deliveries. The new system uses dual lithium batteries with a range of 40 miles before recharging is needed.

“We are thrilled to test how sturdy and powerful our electric bike system is in this heavy hauling application with B-Line,” says Tad Beckwith, EcoSpeed’s sales and marketing director. “As commuters see this heavy trike heading up the hill, they may get the confidence they need to go car-lite with an electric bike, even if they need to haul kids or cargo.”
