Portland takes center stage for World Environment Day
About one-third of all food produced around the world is wasted, according to a new report by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Resources Institute. Collectively, the wasted food is worth about $1 trillion, and accounts for about one-fourth of all calories from food intended for human consumption.
The report, entitled Reducing Food Loss and Waste, will be released in Portland Wednesday as part of World Environment Day.
The Rose City was chosen as the North American host city for this years World Environment Day. The report will be released at City Hall, where Mayor Charlie Hales will deliver remarks on food waste.
