Hales calls on state to sell fossil fuels stocks
Mayor Charlie Hales urged the state of Oregon Wednesday to divest all state holdings in fossil fuel companies.
Hales, who said the city owns no fossil fuel stocks directly, also pledged that the city will begin implementing a 2012 resolution that instructs city bureaus to buy 100 percent of their energy from renewable sources.
Hales, in a keynote speech in honor of World Environment Day, also mentioned that Portland will apply to the Rockefeller Foundation for its 100 Resilient Cities Centennial Challenge. The challenge will help cities prepare for major weather events such as earthquakes.
Portland was selected as host city for the North American celebration of the day by the United Nations Environment Programme.
