Do some holiday shopping while promoting conservation in North Portland, at the Friends of Baltimore Woods used-book sale on Saturday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It’s part of the Cathedral Park Place Holiday Sale & Open House, which goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hand-crafted wares are sold, and visitors explore open studios of graphic artists, painters, ceramicists, photographers and designers.

It’s held in a warehouse under the St. Johns Bridge, at 6635 N. Baltimore Ave.

Don’t let cold weather keep you from enjoying the outdoors.

Bark will lead one of its regular Bark-About hikes to Mt. Hood National Forest on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join guide Audie Fuller, who will discuss threats the forest faces.

Be prepared to hike off trail, and bring lunch, water, sturdy boots and rain gear.

Get weedy

Friends of Tryon Creek hosts a family volunteer day at the state park on Saturday, Nov. 23, 9 a.m. to noon. Come prepared to remove ivy and enjoy a 15- to 20-minute hike in.

Meet at 11321 S.W. Terwilliger Blvd. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and minors must check in at the nature center with a signed insurance form, available at www.tryonfriends.org.

Want to improve wildlife habitat at Willamette Park?

Join Portland Parks & Recreation and the South Portland Riverbank Partners for a morning of planting and caring for native vegetation, weeding and litter pick-up Saturday, Nov. 16, 9 a.m. to noon.

Tools, gloves, training and snacks provided. Come dressed for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring a water bottle.

Meet at the picnic shelter at southern end of the park.

You don’t need to leave the city to help restore your environment. Join SOLVE for a work party to beautify Lombard Street in North Portland, Saturday, Nov. 30, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lombard and Burlington Avenue in St. Johns.

Wear sturdy shoes, bring garden gloves, lunch and a smartphone if you have one; volunteers will take pictures to document what they find.
