Solar Forward raises money for second project at Lent school

Portland’s Oliver P. Lent Elementary School is due to get new photovoltaic solar panels next year, as part of the city’s fledgling Solar Forward Fund.

Mayor Charlie Hales announced a round of new donations to the revolving fund Tuesday, Dec. 3, from Portfolio 21 Investments, Portland Development Commission, SolarWorld, Umpqua Bank and Wells Fargo. Collectively, they contributed more than $20,000. Once the fund grows to $50,000, the Lent school solar project will proceed.

Solar Forward relies on tax-deductible donations to pay for solar power installations at facilities that benefit the community.

The fund was seeded with $100,000 this year from the Oregon Community Foundation’s Penstemon Fund, which paid for a 10-kilowatt solar electric system at Southwest Community Center, a Portland Parks & Recreation facility.

The Lent school would be the second recipient of the fund.
