More veggies for all: CSA program expands pickup sites

COURTESY: PSU INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS - It's becoming more common to see a produce pickup at a local CrossFit gym, through expansion of the PSU-Zenger Farm CSA program.
More Portlanders can pick up their weekly veggie share at their church, clinic or gym, thanks to a program funded by a grant from the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

Led by Portland State University and Zenger Farm, the Community Supported Agriculture Partnerships for Health program is expanding.

The program pairs a local farm with a local organization that signs on as a pickup site for the CSA produce.

Sometimes the organization helps promote the program through tastings and cooking tips.

Last year the program provided 145 families with weekly fresh, organic veggie deliveries, accounting for $75,000 in new CSA sales.

The new state grant means the program is expanding, looking to sign up eight new community organizations or employers to provide veggies to another 350 families.

Funds from Kaiser Permanente and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will aid the expansion and support outreach to low-income communities.
